Allergy Drops
Allergy drops (sublingual drop therapy; sublingual immunotherapy) are a convenient and pain-free alternative to allergy shots. Allergy drops are as effective as and work just like allergy shots, containing small doses of the allergens to which you are allergic.
The goal with allergy drops is to get your body to produce antibodies that block your specific antigens, which in effect desensitizes the body to your offending allergens.
The drops can be taken at home, administered with a dropper bottle under the tongue. Drops and injections are mixed from the same extracts and are equally effective in the treatment of allergies. However, allergy drops contain a much smaller dose than shots because only about 0.1 cc can be absorbed under the tongue at one time
At Mid-Kansas Ear, Nose & Throat Associates, our goal is to help you get relief from allergy symptoms. First, we will conduct allergy testing to find out which specific allergens bother you.
Your provider will then make a recommended treatment plan based on your individual results and determine whether you’re a good candidate for allergy drop immunotherapy.
When will I start seeing relief with allergy drops?
Patients typically notice improvement from allergy drops in 3 to 12 months.
Allergy drops should be taken daily, and treatment length is generally 3-5 years.
Success from allergy drops also greatly depends on you. So, it’s important to remain consistent with your treatments, control environmental factors, when possible, etc.
At Mid-Kansas ENT, we also offer allergy shots or allergy toothpaste as an effective treatment for allergy symptoms.
NOTE: Sublingual drop therapy is not currently covered by any insurance companies, as it is not FDA approved.
